In just a few days, the G20 summit will begin in Hamburg, bringing together the world’s most powerful leaders and their vast entourages to discuss the future of the planet. Meanwhile, dozens of demonstrations with various causes and motives are set to take place across the city. However, the people and their representatives will likely never meet. To change that, Miniatur Wunderland launched an initiative ten days ago to collect and showcase the wishes and demands of the “little people” for a better world.
“Last week, we declared our Hamburg section a ‘Demonstration PERMISSION Zone.’ Here, anyone can place their wish for a better world. A ‘little man’ symbolically raises each message to the sky on behalf of a real person. The response has been overwhelming,” explains Frederik Braun, describing the idea behind the project.
Within a very short time, thousands of people participated, both in Wunderland and online via g20.miniatur-wunderland.de. The entire Hamburg section has transformed into a massive demonstration. Tiny figures now hold over 5,000 speech bubbles with messages and wishes, and more are being added every morning.
“Thousands of delegates from around the world will meet behind closed doors to discuss the future. Some of them will visit Wunderland, so we wanted to give them a condensed display of the people’s voices. Most importantly, we wanted this to be a demonstration for something, not against something—to express hopes and solutions for a better world. We firmly believe that we can shape our own future if we actively stand up for it. Democracy is a responsibility, and we Hamburgers should show the Trumps, Putins, and Erdoğans of this world how colorful, diverse, tolerant, and open a city can be,” says Gerrit Braun.
Unlike many other places in the city, Miniatur Wunderland will not shut down or barricade itself during the G20 summit. Both demonstrators and delegates are equally welcome and invited to place their messages. That said, operations may not be entirely normal: “We are certain to be affected by roadblocks, protests, and cancellations, but we gladly accept that. The people attending the summit are our representatives, and I actually support the idea of them meeting in the heart of our city, rather than in some remote location. The G20 summit brings together thousands of experts and decision-makers discussing critical issues. We should protest, participate, encourage dialogue, and demonstrate to the world that democracy and freedom are not outdated concepts.”
