For many years, Miniatur Wunderland has officially held the title of the largest model railway in the world. With the addition of the new Monaco/Provence section, the layout has been extended by another 315 meters, further expanding its existing world record. The connection of the new railway section was celebrated on the morning of August 14, 2019, in front of the press and in the presence of Guinness World Records® adjudicator Lena Kuhlmann. With this expansion, Miniatur Wunderland has not only extended its own existing record from 15,400 meters to 15,715 meters but has also achieved another remarkable milestone:

There are model railways worldwide in many different scales. Some are built to be nearly lifelike, while others measure just a few millimeters. The common factor among all is their standardized scale, which relates them to the real world. With a newly calculated 1,367.21 kilometers of “real-world” length, Miniatur Wunderland can now officially claim the title of the largest model railway in the world across all scales.

Miniatur Wunderland is by far the largest model railroad in the world and, as of today, is an additional 2.4 kilometers longer. On the occasion of the presentation of the new Guinness World Records book 2016, the last section of track between Switzerland and Italy was laid. This means that the Italian section, which is expected to open in summer 2016, is now part of the system. The certificate for the world record was ceremoniously presented to Frederik and Gerrit Braun by Marco Frigatti, the chief Guinness record adjudicator.

“This is a childhood dream come true for me. Even as very young children, Gerrit and I dreamed of being in the Guinness Book one day. The fact that we are now featured on a double page worldwide is simply an incredibly wonderful feeling for me and makes me really proud,” explains Frederik Braun.

In the current edition of the world’s best-selling book after the Bible, Miniatur Wunderland is portrayed on a double page. The book and the report are published in 26 different countries in a print run of over 3,000,000 copies. Wunderland not only holds the record for the largest model railway layout in the world with 15.4 kilometers of track, but also the record for the largest miniature airport.

“In the history of Wunderland, we have already broken one or two records. It’s simply a lot of fun to approach a challenge in a playful way and then create something that no one else has managed yet. We’ll definitely be tackling one or two more records in the coming years,” explains Gerrit Braun.

One thing is certain: Wunderland will continue to grow. After the opening in Italy next summer, Monaco, England, France and hopefully many other parts of the world will follow. “We therefore hope that this will not be the last time we have Guinness as a guest,” concludes Frederik Braun.
